Abrar Ahmed as a prodigy was identified and nurtured at the Rashid Latif Academy in 2017. This ensured he was snapped up by Karachi Kings in 2017 for three seasons.

But it was not until 2022 that Abrar made his debut at the international mark. He was given a chance against the visiting England side and went on to pick up 7 wickets in the first innings and 4 in the second making it 11 for the game. Pakistan lost that series 0-3 but Abrar picked up 23 wickets to impress all and sundry. Post this performance, he was impossible to ignore. He had an injury concern and hence the 2023 WC plans never materialized. But his Test performances continued to touch newer heights. He was finally given an ODI cap in 2024 on the tour to Zimbabwe. And he impressed there as well. He was the only front line spinner named by the Pakistan team in their squad for the Champions Trophy in 2025. Between the two formats, he also sandwiched in his debut in the shortest format in April 2024 against New Zealand.

He had a fruitful season in PSL 2024 as well picking up 16 wickets from 10 wickets and ending up as the third highest wicket-taker in the tournament for Quetta which actually gave him the ticket to the T20 World Cup. The previous season he had played only three games for Islamabad and hadn't impressed much.
